Pinkyswear
By w. matthews (Nov 21, 2008)
What a great week to be alive! After our long, uphill battle of the past eight years, the coronation of a new king seemed more surreal than anything. Tears flowed like water in a stream as the city rallied alongside the rest of the nation in support of the greatest symbol of hope Americans have had in this generation. It was an amazing spectacle, and it filled us all with a joy we haven’t collectively expressed in a long time. That joy came rushing out of us in a pulsating frenzy, and the scene that spread across San Francisco, though bittersweet, was palpable.

Potrero Hill’s New Spot for Raw Fish, Small Plates and Sake
By Sarah Sung (Nov 14, 2008)
On a street with French, Mediterranean, Chinese, Southeast Asian and, of course, pizza, the only cuisine that’s been missing on Potrero Hill’s 18th Street corridor is Japanese, until this year -- when Umi opened its doors. A casual, sit-down sushi spot, the restaurant is a welcome addition to an already globally cuisine-rich street.
Rustic Perfection
By Nirmala Nataraj (Nov 21, 2008)
The Northern California resort town of Calistoga is known for its historic hot springs (whose therapeutic properties have been soaked up by locals and vacationers for centuries, dating back to the indigenous Americans who discovered the springs’ healing potential) and Main Street soda-fountain charm, which makes this unassuming little hamlet of hedonism all the more appealing. And when it comes to luxury getaways in Calistoga, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Nestled in a private canyon with a view of the majestic Mayacama Mountains, Calistoga Ranch is an exclusive resort that tips its hat to the location’s built-in rusticity.

Systematic Landscapes
By Nirmala Nataraj (Nov 21, 2008)
The 49-year old sculptor and architect Maya Lin is best known for her design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, a monument that attests to the artist’s ability to elicit emotion from a viewer through minimal attempts at representation, and a concurrent reliance on the associative factors of vision and memory to create the desired response. Lin’s monumental approach to her sculpture can also be found in her recent exhibition at the de Young Museum, “Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes", which follows on the heels of her recent installation at the new California Academy of Sciences.
They Want Our Blood
By Martin Malloy (Nov 21, 2008)
Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Regardless of any reviews that are written about this film, Twilight will break records, become a multi-million dollar franchise, and worm its way into the hearts of tweens across the country. The book series has already accomplished this feat and, in turn, so will the films. The familiar story has been told before: girl falls for boy, boy wants girl, but some force keeps them apart.
A Girl and her Dog
By Matt Forsman (Nov 21, 2008)
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) is a dog who has it all. He’s got adorable canine good lucks, a sweetheart owner (Penny voiced by Miley Cyrus), more kibble than a dog pound, and super powers that would make Batman cower in fear. Bolt finds himself saving Penny from the "green-eyed man" and his henchmen day in and day out. The one chink in Bolt’s armor is that he actually doesn’t have superpowers and his owner isn’t really his owner, she’s an actress.
A Stroke Strums
By Matt Crawford (Nov 21, 2008)
Little Joy, the latest project to come out of The Strokes camp during a two-year hiatus, pairs the band’s drummer Fabrizio Moretti with Rodrigo Amarante, of Brazilian rock outfit Los Hermanos, and mystery L.A. belle Binki Shapiro. The trio, named after a bar near its shared L.A. home, has a few subtle similarities with the Strokes -- mainly treble-heavy, crooning vocals -- with doses of Sam Cooke, Brazilian guitar and surf music. Little Joy performs December 9th at Slim’s. Moretti spoke with SF Station from the road en route to Atlanta after the East Coast leg of his tour.
The BBC Sessions
By Sarah-Jayne Couhault (Nov 14, 2008)
A cherry-picked collection of this indie-rock band’s best, the two-disk BBC Sessions will be snapped up by devoted fans in no time. Whilst the song selection doesn’t divert much from the original studio recordings, it’s always nice to have your favorites play one after the other -- making the BBC Sessions the ultimate "best of". Having said that, there are a few rarities from a 2001 session including “Shoot The Sexual Athlete” and “Nothing in the Silence” which was sung by Isobel Campbell shortly before she left the band.
Released on Matador/Domino, 12/9/08
By lynne angel (Nov 14, 2008)
If I were to make a mix tape of my high school years, not only would I need to buy a tape deck and some cassettes but I would also need to dig out my old tape box. And if I felt willing and emotionally stable enough to take a little trip back to 1992 and create a soundtrack to my awkward coming of age and self-conscious adolescent angst, Pavement would be a featured artist.
Released on Lujo Records, 11/18/08
By Martin Malloy (Nov 14, 2008)
Chicago-native Abraham Levitan may be better known as the lead singer of indie-soul group Baby Teeth. But while the group awaits the release of their third album, Levitan decided to break out on his own. Unfortunately, it’s not without its faults.
