About Exit Theatre

A home for San Francisco theatre since 1983.

All four EXIT Stages are near the corner of Eddy & Taylor Streets in downtown San Francisco. EXIT Theatre, EXIT Stage Left, and the EXIT Cafe are located at 156 Eddy Street (between Mason & Taylor Streets). EXIT on Taylor is located just around the corner at 277 Taylor Street (between Eddy & Ellis). They are located just west of the cable car turnaround at Powell and Market Streets.

" As I walk into the Exit Theatre, it is as though I am entering the bowels of Hell itself-- the hallway narrows and darkens, and I find an empty seat in the tiny black womb of the theatre. The stage is small, the setting spare: a stool in the middle, a hanging cloak, and four grinning skulls contemplating the action that is about to unfold. I am vividly reminded of Faustian tales of men selling their souls to the devil in return for magical knowledge. In fact, the play I am here to see is just such a story. "

" Elaborate set designs, bizarre costumes, and actorly chicanery are all very nice, but there's a lot to be said for leaving something to the imagination. That's why I opt in favor of the reading, that magical act galvanized by the alchemy of storytelling. It makes me hearken back to those wondrous days when my mother would read me a bedtime tale and the story would gradually undergo gleeful interruptions and bizarre revisions. Being a child who was always inclined to make things up as I went along, I still believe the "what happens next" mentality isn't quite possible... "
