Gay
Room for Squares
By Philip Wong (May 9, 2008)
A curve ball is something you don’t see coming. You could be happily walking along when out of nowhere a fast one comes and hits you upside the head. It makes you see things from another perspective. The paragraphs that follow are just my way of trying to make sense of something that, up until recently, had always been out of the question. More

One of my favorite things about living in a city is that feeling that you never can tell what's going to happen next. In New York, you may run into supermodels and famous actors. This never tends to be the case in San Francisco. After all, San Francisco billionaires are more likely to be low key. More often than not though, the folks you run into out and about our crazy little wonderland are twice as fascinating as those Yorkers, and I think that L.A. goes without comparison; L.A. isn’t a city, it’s an experiment. More

How much of being gay in the workplace is your business, and how much of it is your employer’s? The answer to that is a highly a personal decision. But whether by our hands or not, those of us who work in the corporate world will sooner or later become office chatter. In this day and age, most of us are protected from unlawful discrimination by Fair Employment laws. However, even those laws can’t save us from the often guillotine like machinations of office politics. More

In a matter of speaking, keeping a social profile of quality is simply a manner of keeping up appearances. One must hit the right clubs, the right events, and steer clear of the fodder and riff raff. If one is at the wrong place at that right time, they will forever be burdened with the title of creep, chaser, or wannabe. Now, if someone would have only told a certain little miss more! More

A good bulk of this column’s past entries has centered on the topic of marriage equality. And without last week’s overturning of the ban on gay marriage, I’m not sure how much more anyone could actually have said on the topic. As it stands, however, things have changed. And change, although upsetting and begrudgingly welcomed in most cases, is in this instance a most well received and celebrated turn of events. More

I need a coffee to keep up ladies and gents! Well, gents! My tan is kicking and my mind is fried from a long hard weekend of basking in the sun! It was definitely the best weather that we are gonna get, ladies! So, I hope you made the most of it…I know I did. After all, we all know there is nothing better than the merriment that can only provided by those sunrays. I spent the weekend riding a SPF high that I couldn’t come off of until Sunday. Let discuss the highlights, shall we? More

Another week, another missed opportunity for me to be some seldom heard, often ignored voice of reason. This time, I had intended to write some perfunctory piece about how Pride is good, Pride is great, Pride is hotter than jailbait. That regular mumbo jumbo about how far we’ve come, how we have so much to be proud of, blah blah blah. And don’t get me wrong, we certainly do. But there’s also a lot for which we shouldn’t be proud. More

I am sure that it wasn't just me, since I after all was one of the many this past weekend, but did anyone else notice that everyone was gone for the holiday? It seems like all the people that I asked about Memorial Weekend blacked out on Friday and came to on Monday. Were the few, the proud, and the nearly sober hibernating for the weekend? Not likely. It seems that everyone took their stimulus package to the four corners of the country sharing the SF gay party with our brethren from across the country. More

The thing about twins is that they try really hard to separate themselves. Take the Olsens, for instance. One is more flower power hobo and the other looks more well-to-do, plastic chic. Simply put, one could care less about appearance and the other couldn’t care more. So whether or not you’re a fan of either Olsen twin, you have to admit that there is a world of difference between the two. A difference, some would say, not unlike the distinction between Northern California and Southern California. More

With summer seemingly officially upon us, I spent a good part of my weekend dusting off my "clothing normally inappropriate for a San Francisco day" trunk and reminisced over what June has meant in San Francisco for the past half-decade. It normally triggers the resurgence of the Eagle Beer Bust, the return of the ever-stereotypical mesh tank, and the kick-off for the annual Gay Pride celebration, proving that Modesto has proud fags, too. They just like their vacations set almost entirely to a soundtrack of obnoxious house music and Crystal Waters throwbacks. Get ready fags, Pride is heading down the pass. More
