| Description QU Productions Presents
Hey, Sailor A new Play written and Directed by Miriam Kronberg with Video by Crystal Mason. This sexy, darkly funny, queer Billy Budd hijacks Melville’s classic tale and slams it into the brutal streets of SF’s Tenderloin. When Billy, a handsome young hustler, picks up cancer-ridden ex-Navy Captain Vere, he celebrates an easy trick: no touching involved. Vere’s game seems benign – to have Billy play sailor to his captain – and he has the money to pay for it. Billy is man enough to pass as Vere’s “handsome sailor” but dreams of getting a double mastectomy to be complete. At first it’s the cash and the dreams of surgery that excite him. But Billy quickly becomes engrossed in a fantasy of war and manhood from which he may not escape alive. Hey, Sailor was selected as First Runner Up in the 5th Annual Saints and Sinners Literary Festival Playwriting Competition, in New Orleans (May 2007). Bringing together theatre and film, this sexy, darkly funny, queer Melville rip-off chews up the classic Billy Budd novella and spits it out onto the brutal streets of the Tenderloin. Join us for this powerful tale of desire shaped and distorted by gender, poverty, sex and war.
