If you haven’t herd of Devotchka I am not surprised although they are one amazing band. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, this quartet can be classified as indie rock, European folk and something that's their own special style. The obviously obsessed fans were staring nonstop and moving to every note of Nick Urata’s Theremin. Devotchkas horns, guitars, drums and other instruments combine to simply make sweet, sweet music.More

The Midwest is not dead; I say and so do Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos. As eight people filled the small stage with three guitars, a cello, trumpet, two drummers and a keyboard I knew this was going to be something to see. With their own brand of rock and roll that mixes melodic guitars and simple keyboard they infected the crowd. With songs like “Quiet As A Mouse” these kids are on their way to stardom because it shows the range that not only Richard has but also the rest of the band's ability to go between genres within one song.More

I am sure you’ve now heard of The Libertines long after the band broke apart because their band mate (whose name I will exclude out of this because it is not about him) had certain…bad habits. This is about Dirty Pretty Things the new project from Carl Barat, Didz Hammond, Gary Powell and Anthony Rossomando and how good and dirty they really are. Slim's filled up slowly on Wednesday night with people walking straight to the front to get a good spot to see the legendary Brits to hit the stageMore

Manu Chao is a legend all over the world and I found out why last Friday night at the Greek Theater. He performed in front of close to 9000 people screaming and jumping to his every word. With a sound that incorporates punk, rock and Latin rhythms, Chao controlled the crowd and made them bow to his will. His politically charged lyrics and amazing back up musicians drove the crowd into a frenzy of stomping feet.More

The Doctor is in and his name is Gnarles Barkley or, as you may know him, Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse. I was standing in the pit in front of the stage as the band hit the stage dressed as nurses and from the first note the crowd went wild. Cee-Lo and Danger walked on to the stage dressed as Docs with their own flare. Cee-Lo’s amazing voice is shown in every song on the album St. Elsewhere and is definitely shown on stage when he hits the high notes.More

Dim Mak records is known around the world for discovering amazing bands like Bloc Party, The Kills and many more, Scanners are no exception as I found out. Just like any other night at Popscene there were hipsters running around and bopping their mohawks to the beat of the music. As the first lyrics came out of the mouth of Sarah (lead vocals/bass) I knew this band was one of a kind; I would like to make a comparison but I simply can't. With every note it sucked me in and made me feel like I was the only person in the room and the band was making music just for me.More

Backpacker hip-hop is alive and well with hometown hero Aesop Rock. With his first performance since his move to the bay, Aesop has proven that he is the man of the rhyme. Sold out Independent hosted Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and Murs, who performed some of their classic hits and new material. The mixture of Bay Area hip hop and Brooklyn beats was something to see so grab your hoody and your sneaks and step on the dance floor.More

The cold war may be over but the lifestyle and music it created still lives on. I was told to check out this band called The War Kids by a friend. So on a Wednesday night I went down to the Independent to take a look and it was pretty interesting. I'm not sure how to describe these kids other than something "different". Playing a high hat on a wooden box, a Perrier bottle and making other noises that when strung together by the Kids into a melody hits you in the head and causes you to move. I don’t want to make you think that these guys are primal noisemakers -- there is amazing guitar and keys with some crazy drums as well.More

Radiohead is one of music’s most prolific bands to date. They hit the stage at the beautiful Greek Theater with the fog moving in and the crowd oh-so-ready for them. As always the show had an amazing light and video show, and a sound that made people simply freeze; the boys of Radiohead are back. The show consisted of mostly new songs and some classic, and Thom Yorke was an unstoppable presence on stage as the conductor, vocalist, guitar player and piano player.More

Walking into 330 Ritch on any Thursday night is to indulge yourself in rock, punk, indie or just plain good music. On this night a band called Elephone was performing for the CD release of The Camera Behind The Camera Behind The Camera. I will say I was not disappointed, these guys rocked the house with a sound that mixes My Bloody Valentine with U2 (pre "WAR"), and some other stuff that I can't put my finger on. With haunting vocals and driving guitar these guys are on my go to list.More
