Stellastarr* returned to San Francisco for a pair of sold out shows, the first at Popscene and the second at Bottom of the Hill. So I made an effort to go to the Popscene one and it was well worth it with the kids debuting some new tunes and playing some fan favorites. I have to say that the new stuff like “Warchild” has proved that these NYC kids have definitely returned to their roots with soulful lyrics and driving rhythms.More

While standing in front of the stage surrounded by hardcore fans waving Australian flags, wearing face paint and screaming for the band to hit the stage, I felt like this was a soccer match. When Cat Empire hit the stage they showed me that they were not soccer players but amazing musicians. There is no way that I can put the band into one class; they are a mix of Soul, R&B, Rock, Punk and 10 more styles of music that made my ears perk up and listen. Both of the lead singers are incredible, particularly Harry James Angus' vocal range, which moved between octaves like he was a machine.More

Homecomings are so sweet and when Audrye Sessions hit the stage last Thursday night at Popscene it was no different. Rolling melodies, simple guitars and pulsating drums filled the room as Ryan Karazjia’s voice filled my ears. The Sessions' ability to seamlessly take us on the lows and highs of life is something great and beautiful.More

One of the queens of R&B returned to the stage on a cold night in San Francisco and made us all sweat. Her sultry voice filled the club with lyrics that made everyone sing and dance along. She performed hits from her last 3 albums as well as some upcoming releases that showed her prolific ability to create beauty with words.More

I really didn’t know much about Oakland’s Maldroid outside of them being the winner of the "Best Music Video" in the YouTube Underground contest, so walking into the Rickshaw stop I was a blank slate. Looking around the venue I could see a mix of geeks (this was the Imeem.com after party for Macworld…) and hipsters begin to dance and sing along from the first note; that’s always a good sign in my book. With simple lyrics that remind me of other Oakland bands like The Matches and Synthetic Beats, Maldroid did a great job making people dance.More

The first night Fall Out Boy hit the stage in front of a sold out crowd, 2,000 plus fans screamed uncontrollably. The Boys stirred the crowd into a frenzy with outrageous moves and quick guitar rhythms. It was no surprise that old and new songs were graced with a phenomenal stage presence. Their on stage finesse is accompanied by lyrics that capture teenage angst about love, life and the difficulties of growing up.More

James Walsh otherwise known as Starsailor hit the stage at Mighty few weeks ago to a sold out crowd and showed us why the Brits rule the world (at least musically). Her performed a solo acoustic set from his new album On the Outside and his brand of melodic rock made me move. As girls screamed his name and boys danced to his cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” it made me feel like Cash was in the room.More

The Dan The Automator presents 2K7 tour stopped at Mezzanine last Thursday with a slew of special guest stars like Chali 2NA of Jurassic 5, Gavin of the band Dredg, Casual of Hieroglyphics and A.G. of D.I.T.C it was one hell of a show. Performing with a live band Dan whipped the crowd into a frenzy with his style of electronica, hip hop and rock, dropping beats that would even make the dead dance and scream.More

So I was walking to the Bill Graham Civic last Monday to go see Tenacious D perform in front of 8000+ people and as I looked around I realized every single person was doing the same thing in trepidation. The opening act was a comedian named Neil Hamburger who shtick was jokes so bad that people threw change at the stage but from the first glimpse of the D it was worth it. The entire performance was more like a rock opera with set changes and a full band backing the boys. It was one of the best live shows I have ever seen...More

Austin, Texas is known for producing great music and Voxtrot is one of those bands, and if you were at Popscene last week you would know why. With a sound that mixes 60s pop and indie rock these boys made me dance all night. With guitars that would make even George Harrison nod his head and drums that you could count your heartbeat to, these guys are one amazing outfit.More
