SF Station Blows It Up Austin, Texas is known for producing great music and Voxtrot is one of those bands, and if you were at Popscene last week you would know why. With a sound that mixes 60s pop and indie rock these boys made me dance all night. With guitars that would make even George Harrison nod his head and drums that you could count your heartbeat to, these guys are one amazing outfit.More
SF Station Blows It Up The UK does it again and this time they are called The Kooks; this foursome destroyed Popscene last week. I got to the club at around 10pm and the line was almost a block and a half deep of kids hoping they will get in to see the new UK darlings in a small club before they hit the big time in the US. If I were to mix The Police, Stone Roses and The Doors in a big giant pot I would get The Kooks.More
SF Station Blows It Up So I was one of the lucky few to get to go see Incubus at Bimbo’s this past week and it was one hell of a show. The last time I saw these guys was at the HP Pavilion with 10,000 fans screaming their name so it was a treat to see them in a place that only holds 800 people. The energy in the place was almost palpable; the people in attendance were definitely ready to see one of rock's greatest bands hit the stage.More
SF Station Blows It Up Lilly Allen has taken the UK by storm and if you were at Popscene last week, then you saw why. With her Ska influenced horn section, vocals that remind me of some 30s lounge singer and almost angelic stage presence, Lily, drove the crowd nuts. Lily, performing songs like “Smile” from her up coming album, had a bewitching onstage presence that kept all the indie rock kids wanting more.More
SF Station Blows It Up On this night at Popscene I was to cover the new indie darlings The Dears and while they did a good job I can't help but talk about the opening band Fields who simply blew me away. With heavy guitar riffs and keyboards that drive even the biggest cynic to dance to the amazing synergy between the two vocalists Thorunn Antoni and Nick Peill this is the band to watch.More
SF Station Blows It Up Quannum records did it again with Honey Cut a mix of hip-hop, rock and funk. These newcomers to the game are tearing it a new one with crazy moves and cool beats. Mezzanine was full of people waiting in trepidation for these kids to hit the stage and once they did, performing hits from their brand new album The Day I Turned To Glass no one was disappointed.More
SF Station Blows It Up DFA was in the building on a Wednesday night at Mezzanine and the bass was rocking. If you don’t know DFA records you must not be into good music. The record label responsible for LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture and Hot Chip, and the people behind the label James Murphy and Juan Maclean rocked the building. On this night, to my surprise, the music was nothing that you would expect from these legends of the beat. It was dark and chunky with a twist of Juan and James. The crowd was a cool mix of DFA kids, mission bike messengers and straight club kids just having a good time.More
SF Station Blows It Up The Dutch were in the building last Friday and my Nite Versions began. Soulwax performed live promoting their new album at Mezzanine and what a show it was with booming beats and crazy rhythms that made even me stomp my feet. There is no one that I can compare this live sound to, it gets into your brain and takes over, so step out of the box and see the Nite Versions.More
SF Station Blows It Up If you like Bowie, Duran Duran and The Faint you're going to like Test Your Reflex. I knew nothing about the band when I stepped into Popscene. I think I was the only one in the front row that didn’t know who these kids were but I soon found out. With simple vocals and complex cord progressions they rocked the crowd. Ryan's lead vocals and energy onstage is on par with Dave Gahan; I felt like he was trying to reach out to every fan and every fan was reaching back. Performing songs like “Pieces of the Sun” showed the true energy of this band.More
SF Station Blows It Up Once again the folks at Popscene have done it right on a nice Friday night. I had walked into 330 Ritch to hear and see some good music and once again I wasn’t disappointed. On this night it was the Silversun Pickups and Sparta. If you haven’t heard of either of these bands get your head out of the sand and go out and find them! The Silversun Pickups took the stage first with front man Brian Aubert simply killing it, flawless guitar that makes your mind run non stop and Christopher Guanlao’s drums that just f**king rock. These guys tore a new one through the club.More
