| The BBC Sessions A cherry-picked collection of this indie-rock band’s best, the two-disk BBC Sessions will be snapped up by devoted fans in no time. Whilst the song selection doesn’t divert much from the original studio recordings, it’s always nice to have your favorites play one after the other -- making the BBC Sessions the ultimate "best of". Having said that, there are a few rarities from a 2001 session including “Shoot The Sexual Athlete” and “Nothing in the Silence” which was sung by Isobel Campbell shortly before she left the band.More | | Columbia Records, 10/07/08 On October 7, Bob Dylan released the eighth volume of his Bootleg Series, but even eight times on, this collection of rare, unreleased and alternatively recorded gems, just keeps getting better. Thought you had heard all of Dylan’s greatest? Think again -- because really there is no such thing. Dylan’s professional life is a work in progress and this album proves that there are plenty more tricks up the old dog’s sleeve.More | | Released on Matador Records, 10/28/08 Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
When Lou Reed first released his Berlin album in 1973, Rolling Stone referred to it as a “distorted and degenerate demimonde of paranoia, schizophrenia, degradation, pill-induced violence and suicide”. Some 30 years later, the magazine named it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time.More | | Released on XL Recordings, 7/8/08 Twangy, trance-evoking, peaceful, melodic, tribal, upbeat, downbeat -- Ratatat’s latest album LP3 will not disappoint their electro-pop fans. The unique collaboration between Mike Stroud and Evan Mast that dates back to 2001 is -- in the duo’s own words -- "totally from the future, man!"More | | Released on Shout Factory, 7/1/08 Cementing their place in the recent rise of top tier LA bands, Earlimart offers poignant indie-pop on their latest collaboration Hymn and Her that engages fans with inspirational lyrics and rhythmic melodies to rival their previous effort in 2007 Mentor Tormentor.More | | Released on Astralwerks, 4/15/08 I first came across The Kooks whilst traveling through Byron Bay on Australia’s East Coast in the back of a Combi Van. Whilst shopping for surf wax, I noticed a compilation album called Coastal Chill 2007. As "chill" was perhaps the best way to describe our location, and the eclectic crowd that had gathered for the annual blues and roots festival Blues Fest, I bought a copy -- and literally "fell in love at the seaside"…with The Kooks.More | | Released on Matador Records, 3/18/08 American post-punk band, Mission of Burma, who formed in Boston in 1979, is bringing tears of nostalgia back to the eyes of the 80s punk revolution. Rebellious, unconventional and powerful, the re-mastered sound of albums, Vs, Signals, Calls and Marche, and live album The Horrible Truth About Burma, easily the best of their Ace of Hearts Catalogue, are finally being re-released by Matador Records.More | | Released on Beggars Xl Recording, 3/18/08 Accents aside, there is definitely a certain "euro-trash" element to this album -- and I mean that as a compliment. As only the Europeans can do successfully, this French trio’s wit and irreverence is an obvious drawcard even amongst the cryptic lyrics and 80s-inspired pop instrumentals.More | | Released on 4AD, 2/18/08 The Mountain Goats have come a long way since the days when they covered Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Lead vocalist and songwriter, John Darnielle says it himself in the album’s second song "San Bernadino". Heretic Pride, the band’s 11th full-length recording since 1994, is like a kaleidoscope.More | | Released on Om Records, 3/04/08 When initially loading Black Spade’s not-yet-released album To Serve with Love, I almost turned it off after the twisted intro. Not wishing to judge too quickly, I kept listening and I’m glad I did.More |
