Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 13, and bring your appetite. The San Francisco vegan foodie cartel will be holding its biggest bake sale yet, with proceeds benefiting two local organizations: Harvest Home Sanctuary and Cycles of Change APC Bike Shop. The event, sponsored by VegNews Magazine and Vegansaurus.com, will take place from 11am to 4pm in front of Ike's Place at 3506 16th St. (at Sanchez).

Ike's Place played host to the previous bake sale events, all of which proved to be wildly successful and totaled earnings more than $10,000. The most recent bake sale, held in December, exceeded all expectations by raising $4200 in just five hours. The landmark event featured more than fifty local bakers, from at-home activists to Bay-Area professionals. All proceeds were donated to the Food Empowerment Project, a food-justice advocacy group, and Save-a-Bunny rescue, a local center dedicated to rescuing in-need rabbits.

Organizers are once again upping the ante for the next bake sale, expecting an even bigger turnout. All proceeds will again benefit two non-profits. Harvest Home Sanctuary rescues, shelters, and cares for both domesticated and farmed animals in need. Harvest Home residents, including the lovable hen Doris, will be in attendance to greet and interact with customers. Cycles of Change APC is a non-profit community bike shop, located on the former naval base in Alameda. Empowering local communities, it offers job training for formerly homeless people, earn-a-bicycle opportunities, a bicycle donation center, volunteer positions, recycled bicycle sales, and full-service repairs.

February’s SF Vegan Bakesale will feature goods from a range of local bakers—professionals and amateurs alike. Highlights include Cinnaholic Sweets, who recently took first place in SF Food Wars’ Mini Cupcake Clash, Sugar Beat Sweets, whose goods can be sampled at Rainbow Grocery and throughout the city, and the editors of VegNews Magazine. From fragrant focaccia bread to the best cinnamon rolls in the Bay Area, organizers promise a wide, not-to-be-missed selection.

All baked goods will be vegan (100-percent free of animal products) and an effort will be made to include gluten-free, soy-free, and low-fat baked goods. Bakers are still being recruited, and donations of plates, napkins, and to-go containers are needed. Interested contributors can contact laura@vegansaurus.com.
